Dr. Stella Yoo was born in Seoul, South Korea, and immigrated to Koreatown, Los Angeles, at the age of three. She spent her childhood in various cities including Lincoln, Nebraska, for kindergarten and Dallas, Texas, for elementary school before moving back to Seoul from fourth grade to sixth grade. Her adolescent years in Seoul were pivotal in fostering bilingualism and biculturalism, which equip her to be a culturally sensitive physician for today’s Korean immigrant patients in Koreatown.

Her education and training are as follows:

• • Made Dean’s list three times, which recognizes the top 4% of students
• Medical school education at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA

• • Studied at Seoul National University Hospital for a visiting elective in radiation oncology
• Internship in internal medicine at Abington Memorial Hospital
• • Named Intern of the Year and Resident of the Month
• Residency in radiation oncology at University of Southern California (USC)
• • Served as chief resident in final year
• • Named “Hero of the Week” at Los Angeles County Hospital
• • Received the national ACGME David C. Leach award for her work in developing the first resident continuity clinic in the country

Her leadership roles include serving as a board member of the national organization of Korean American Society of Radiation Oncology (KASTRO, treasurer) and the local chapter of the Korean American Graduate Medical Association (KAGMA, vice president). Dr. Yoo’s academic projects include Korean cancer outreach programs such as survivorship care and educational seminars for the community. Her vision for the future is to raise awareness to the needs of the Korean people, who are otherwise considered a small ethnic minority in America.

닥터유는 대한민국 서울에서 태어나 세살 되던 해에 로스앤젤레스 한인타운으로 이민을 오게 되었습니다. 유치원은 네브래스카주 링컨, 초등학교는 텍사스주 달라스 등 여러 도시에서 어린 시절을 보낸 뒤 초등학교 4학년부터 6학년까지는 서울에서 학창시절을 보냈습니다. 서울에서의 청소년기는 이중언어와 이중문화를 배우는데 중요한 역할을 했으며, 이는 한인타운의 한인 이민자 환자들을 문화적으로 이해하기 쉬운 의사가 되기 위한 준비를 도와주었습니다.
